Addison's Ball
a Benefit for Congenital Heart Disease
Addison’s Ball is a nonprofit organization that was established in 2008 in honor of three-year-old Addison Birney to raise awareness and funding for the number one birth defect in children, Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Addison was diagnosed with Double Outlet Right Ventricle with a Ventricular Septal Defect when she was three days old. Since that time she has been to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) four times for four different surgical heart procedures and is scheduled to have her fifth this spring. Her journey with this defect will last the rest of her life, but her amazing courage and spirit has lifted the lives that she has touched in ways that are unimaginable.
Addison’s success can be accredited to the amazing cardiac staff at CHOP. This team is world renowned and families travel amazing distances to receive treatment here. It is important that we continue to help this team make amazing breakthroughs and make it possible for every baby born with a CHD and their family’s to have hope for a successful treatment and recovery. 1 in 100 babies are born with one or more of the 35 types of CHD and most of those babies will need some sort of surgical intervention before their first birthday in hopes of survival. The advancements with this disease have only been in the past 30 years and there is still so much work to be done. Nearly twice as many children die from Congenital Heart Defects in the United States each year as from all forms of childhood cancers combined, yet funding for pediatric cancer research is five times higher than funding for CHD.
